  1. W i n N E T   M a i l (TM)

  3. This screen controls the settings that permit WinNET Mail to
  4. operate your modem to communicate with the WinNET system. 
  5.  
  6. The defaults will work for most modems, but please check:
  7.  
  8.    o  CWI Internet Service Telephone Number.  If you are
  9.       local to San Francisco, you will need to change this. 
  10.       You may also need to change it if there are additional
  11.       codes for dialing an outside line, international
  12.       calling, etc. (see below)
  13.  
  14.    o  Port Assignment.  Is this correct for your modem?
  15.    
  16. After your system is setup, you may want to re-run setup and
  17. increase the Interface speed if your modem and machine can
  18. support faster speeds.
  19.  
  20. Fields:
  21.  
  22. 1.  CWI Internet Service Telephone Number.  WinNET Mail
  23.     communicates with the WinNET server via telephone.  The
  24.     WinNET server telephone number is: 
  25.  
  26.                 (415) 752-9360
  27.  
  28.     This is located in San Francisco, California, U.S.A. 
  29.     You should change the Telephone Number field to contain
  30.     whatever number your modem must dial to reach the WinNET
  31.     server. 
  32.  
  33.     Things to remember:
  34.     
  35.     A.  If you are local to San Francisco, you should not
  36.         include the area code, just use 
  37.  
  38.                 752-9360
  39.  
  40.     B.  Some business lines require that you get an outside 
  41.         line first.  Often by dialing a 9, or an 8 first.

  46.         For most modems a comma means pause for 2 seconds.

  48.     C.  For international callers:

  50.         Country Code: 1, City Code: 415, phone: 752-9360

  52. 2.  Interface Speed.  This is the speed at which your
  53.     computer will talk with your modem.   This speed should
  54.     be as fast as your modem will support.  Please check
  55.     your modem manual.  Here are some typical speeds
  56.     supported by modems.

  67.        14400 BPS,  v.42bis    57600

  69. 3.  Port Assignment.  Choose the Communication (COM) port  
  70.     that your modem uses: COM 1, 2, 3, or 4.
  71.     
  72.     If you are not sure, it is best to exit WinNET setup and
  73.     use the Windows Terminal program to test different ports.
  74.     From the Terminal program select menu "Setup", sub menu
  75.     "Communications...".  "Connector" is the COM port. 
  76.     "Baud Rate" corresponds to Interface speed for WinNET. 
  77.     When you have set up Terminal correctly, you should be
  78.     able to type "AT" followed by Enter on the main
  79.     Terminal screen and get back "OK" from the modem.

  81. 4.  Packet Window Size.  Normally, the default (5)
  82.     setting is OK for this.  Higher settings will tend to 
  83.     improve performance where there are good quality phone
  84.     connections or you are using error correcting modems.
  85.     Lower settings are better when there are noisier line
  86.     conditions.

  88. 5.  Set Factory Default AT Command.  This is the modem
  89.     command to reset your modem.   The default, ATZ, will
  90.     work for most modems setting the modem to either the
  91.     factory defaults or to the user saved profile.  On many
  92.     modems, AT&F, will set the modem to factory defaults.
  93.  
  94. 6.  Modem Setup AT Command.  These commands initialize your
  95.     modem with important settings for WinNET.   You must use
  96.     either the:
  97.  
  98.                 V1  -  English result codes, or
  99.                 V0  -  Numeric result codes
  100.  
  101.     in this command.  You may also want to turn off the
  102.     speaker by changing the default M1 command to M0.
  103.  
  104. 7.  CPU Utilization.  Lower settings cause WinNET to be
  105.     more cooperative in sharing computing resources with
  106.     other applications.  A higher setting can improve
  107.     performance somewhat. 
  108.  
  109. 8.  Dialing.  If you phone system does not support
  110.     Touch-Tone dialing, select Pulse (rotary).
